Security Services Innovation

The goals of this blog series is to explore how 21st century technological advancements are evolving the security services industry by transitioning from standard security guard services to technology leveraged security services.
As technology continues to emerge, many services are either being upgraded or replaced by systems that improve efficiencies and reduce costs. Innovation has changed the competitive landscape for businesses and the customers they service across the world. The technological shift is rapidly advancing and particularly relevant for human capital businesses operating in high risk and low margin environments. The security services industry is one of the oldest employment sources in the world, having biblical references in the Old Testament and becoming a popular profession in the 1st century AD, operating worldwide and in a competitive business environment. Although thousands of years have passed, the essence of security guard services has relatively remained unchanged, until now.
Technological advancements have become a global phenomenon, age-old industries, such as security services have an opportunity to evolve. Evolution leveraged by changing market conditions can create an opportunity or significant challenges for industry stakeholders. When alternatives are available that produce affective results for a fraction of the cost disruption occurs. Even an industry so historic, the security services sector will need to embrace technology, specifically the evolution of video surveillance to drive sustainability and maintain enterprise value.
As new threats continue to emerge the security services sector plays a critical role in protecting the safety and security of our nation. Most of the private security sector operates in a for-profit capacity and is often the frontline of defense for our nation’s wellbeing. A significant portion of our nation’s security personnel are responsible for protecting critical infrastructure including healthcare, energy, communications, transportation, commercial facilities, and financial services. The businesses employing these individuals offer a variety of services including unarmed, armed, dedicated, or patrol services.
The security services sector has grown significantly over the last decade and currently outnumbers the amount of sworn law enforcement officers in the United States.
Law enforcement agencies in the United States employ over 760,000 sworn officers across 18,000 federal, state, and local departments. The number of outsourced security officers totaled nearly 800,000 employees, employed by roughly 8,000 contract security companies. The total employment data between law enforcement and security personnel, share a staggering similarity, the total between the two equal over 1.56 million people tasked to protect our homeland.
